If I could paraphrase a bit of this morning's Psalm (108:10-13), it would go something like this:
"Who's going to take me to a place where I can rest and enjoy life for once?
If it's not you, then who, Lord?
Is it not you, Lord, who has left us behind, who forgot to show up?
So, come on then, give us some help here!
'Cause we're doing a pretty shoddy job on our own.
But with you, we've experienced much hope,
and we've come to rely on that hope and to expect your presence in our suffering."
Sometimes the Psalms are surprisingly accusatory. But maybe instead of chalking it up to yet another episode of a complaining people, we might read a genuine hope and expectation for God to make in the present the difference he's made in the past. I think this is a fair request, one that was welcomed by the God of ("complaining") Israel and answered in our suffering Lord, Jesus.
So come on, friends. Let's bring our prayers and requests to the Lord and see how they might be answered –– perhaps newly and unexpectedly –– in Jesus's walk to the Cross.
