"Moses replied, 'When I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands in prayer to Yahweh. The thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so you may know that the earth is Yahweh's.'" - Exodus 9:29
The image of Moses' hands "spread out" in prayer is a powerful one. As we read this text, God's Spirit invites us to picture Moses lying prostrate before the altar of Yahweh, his body and hands literally spread out. We're also invited to ponder the metaphorical/figurative significance, where we observe in Moses a genuine desire to open himself and the people of Israel to receiving relief from God. It is a posture of vulnerability, of confession, and of hope.
I'm praying that this day I, too, might adopt such a pose.
